It All Starts With You
As a social worker, I always find it amusing when that both clients and colleagues refer to my office as the magic room. Or even better, that I have magic powers.

I always find these observations to be so far from the truth and often then myself begin to picture my office with magical powers ,…I guess, I could take these silly observations as a compliment for the work that I do, however; honestly- I really can’t since all of the work that one might observe to be “magic” truly is personal to my clients and the work that they do when they leave my office!
The truth is, when I meet and work with clients there is an observable difference in how they walk away from our sessions, and arrive the next week. This observation is noticeable due to the work that my clients put into themselves each week in between sessions. I take great pride in offering my clients tools that they can immediately begin to use and try out in their daily lives and begin to notice a change in how they see themselves, their relationships, and the life experiences that they are apart of.
In this blog, I don’t want to downplay the work that my clients do, but I do want to highlight one common thread of the work that they each incorporate into their lives to begin to notice improved happiness, personal satisfaction with their production related to work/ personal goals, and an observable change in their mood and attitude by those around them. So what is this “magic” element that my clients practice to begin to improve the way they feel and experience life? The answer is honestly, Self Care!
The way that I describe Self Care in the most simple form is; taking care of yourself. I know, WOW, shocker right!?!? It seems so obvious, but really the majority of us often put ourselves last. Many of us often feel guilty or selfish for taking that “me time” that we truly need to recharge and connect. However; incorporation of self care on a daily basis I like to say, is one sure fire way you can build your suit of armor.
Building a strong suit of armor, helps you enjoy more of what life has to offer, as it allows those small things that tend to bother us, fester in us, or make us lash at the ones we love; instead bounce off you and not affect your overall mood, helping you to find more enjoyment and personal satisfaction within each day. If you are feeling irritable, anxious, or pulled in too many directions to fully enjoy all that you are apart of, I’d encourage you to really consider incorporating some self care in your life.
Self-Care activities can be simple to incorporate into your daily routine and should be personal to what makes you most happy. Below you will find a link that will provide you with a ton of self care ideas that you can look through and choose from to begin incorporating into any part of your daily routine! Challenge yourself, start by picking one activity and begin building your own suit of armor. Try it for a week, I’ll bet you’ll begin to notice positive changes in your mood, attitude, and an overall improved sense of personal satisfaction; to begin feeling your stronger self!
